An enormous leaked set photo is going around the internet, and it might actually confirm one of the most anticipated crossover events in Marvel history.

What Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Before we break down the substance of the leaked photo, let’s quickly cover just what Spider-Man: Brand New Day is and its context. While Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have kept all official plot synopses under wraps, we do now know that the title literally draws from the 2008 Marvel Comics series of the same name.

In the comic, Peter Parker made a deal with the demon Mephisto to erase his marriage to Mary Jane to save Aunt May. The end result is a brand new status quo for Spider-Man, new relationship dynamics, a clean slate, and plenty of surprises.

The Set Photo That Has Caused All the Buzz

This week, a set photo was leaked online of none other than Tom Holland’s Spider-Man standing next to Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch, a.k.a. Daredevil in costume. The two appear to be hanging out in an alley, with random debris around them, which at this point feels pretty common whenever there is a MCU set photo following a battle.

While Cox made an appearance as Matt Murdoch in No Way Home, this is the first time he is spotted with Holland on set in what could be an action scene.

Key Things to Think About Have Come to Light in the Photo:

Murdoch is shown in full Daredevil gear, and not just his civilian clothes.

Spider-Man’s suit looks like it might have an upgrade, and is more like the red-and-blue comic color costume hinted at the end of No Way Home.

The background signs reference “Nelson & Murdoch,” implying we are on the Hell’s Kitchen side of things.

Naturally, it feels like the internet blew a gasket. Has there been a secretz full- blown Spider-Man with Daredevil team-up coming from Marvel? Is this an indication of actual street-level superheroes colliding in our universe?

A Ground-level Avengers

If this image is real – and sources say it is – Marvel may be preparing to establish a new street-level organization in the MCU. Given the cosmic nature of the immediate Avengers threat in Kang and incursions, Marvel is seemingly unveiling a street-level version of some of its Phase 5 and 6 programming.

Characters such as Daredevil, Echo, Kingpin, and even Punisher are making their way back with Spider-Man, now outside of the Avengers loop, as an ideal character to pair with.

This supposed team-up would also correlate with the recent reports that Marvel is putting together a “street Avengers” or “Defenders-type team” featuring:

Spider-Man (Tom Holland)

Daredevil (Charlie Cox)

Echo (Alaqua Cox)

Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter – would return)

Punisher (Jon Bernthal – confirmed for Daredevil: Born Again)

Will We See Kingpin?

While we are on the topic of Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, another major question mark back in the shadows is the intimidating criminal boss Vincent D’Onofrio. Kingpin was last seen in Hawkeye and will show up in Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, and he may serve as the perfect villain to bring Spider-Man and Daredevil together.

Comic fans will recall many instances when Spider-Man and Daredevil teamed up to battle Kingpin’s criminal takeover. Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day going to adapt that rivalry to the big screen?

With Kingpin’s reach over New York’s underworld, it would organically provide a narrative hook—especially when Peter Parker is not living the high-tech Avengers lifestyle. This is back-to-basics Spider-Man, and Kingpin’s world is the one he thrives in.

Is the Multiverse Still Possible?

Another possibility is that this is a multiverse crossover. While No Way Home cracked the multiverse open, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could take a monumental dive into the multiverse, especially if Mephisto or some form of reality warping enters the scene.

Could this daredevil be a variant? Is this Spider-Man in an alternate timeline? While that is unlikely, it isn’t out of the question. Marvel has been expanding its use of multiverse storytelling through Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and What If…?

That being said, most clues indicate this is the MCU’s main line Daredevil, and this team-up is starting something much more grounded rather than the multiversal nonsense.

What This Means for Spider-Man’s Future in the MCU

With Tom Holland confirmed for at least one more solo film and two appearances in the MCU, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be where the journey to a new trilogy begins.

Rather than a world-ending crisis, we could see a story arc that revolves around:

Street-level crime

Legal drama (via Matt Murdock)

Identity issues/struggles

Redemption

While we’ve been teased with the possibility of the incorporation of Black Cat, Miles Morales, and list of a few others, including Gwen Stacy, the Spider-Verse could grow from the inside out.

Fan Reactions and Theories

Within hours of the set photo leaking, Reddit threads and Twitter feeds exploded with theories. Some of the most viral include:

Spider-Man becomes a full-time partner of Daredevil. A slight nod to Tony Stark’s influence, but getting grounded, the hero’s journey now serves as Peter’s guidance.

Daredevil again – this time possibly serving as Peter’s lawyer for his lost identity or whatever new legal drama might arise.

A soft reboot of the Netflix Marvel universe; some familiar faces are back.  Everything is under the control of Kevin Faige, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be a couple of years away from a new revamped comics vibe and feel.

Final Thoughts: The Crossover We Actually Deserve?

Marvel has given us a massive feature crossover with things like Avengers: Endgame and Multiverse of Madness, but several fans miss the closer connections of characters that are rarely developed all at once in the early movies of the MCU. A Spider-Man and Daredevil crossover gives you everything you want.
